2002 Beaune and Volnay Premier Crus (San Francisco): Light ruby. A small amount of mustiness that blew off. Grippy leaner style with more obvious oak and a dry, tannic finish. The fruit is still alive, but the soil has a stronger imprint. I think recent vintages of this are more refined and better balanced than this.

Poetry in a glass. Still drinking well, but probably nearing the end of its peak, so drink up. Opened a couple of hours and then decanted shortly before drinking, which did the trick.

(Bouchard Père et Fils Beaune Grèves Vigne de l’Enfant Jésus) The same label has been used since 1791. Always ripens earlier than most other Beaune vines due to the vineyard being a little like an amphitheatre. A nicely forward nose of smooth red fruit, a little powdery and an extra black depth - there's more than a hint of spice too. Mouthfilling, complex but a friendly package with a creamy edge. Long and very fine - I've bought some.
