  • The inaugural vintage of Colgin's Cariad is a doozy, with beautifully integrated fruit, lively energy, and a soulful depth. Made by Helen Turley, the 1999 more than held its own compared to a 2010 Bettina and 2008 Cariad, with an elegant and layered mouthfeel that had the most lift of the trio, despite its two decades of age. I often seek out old wines out of curiosity, in part because sometimes I find brilliance - and this wine is such a discovery: it is a beautiful, beguiling wine.

Garnet in color and medium in body, the wine offers lively aromas of blackberry, pencil lead, sandstone, and bay leaf. Flavors of black cherry, boysenberry (seeds and all), espresso, and dried herbs (particularly thyme and oregano), with a chiseled and lingering finish that belies its age by at least a decade. Blend of 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot, and 5% Cab Franc (all from Abreu’s Madrona) as well as 5% Petit Verdot (from Abreu’s Thorevilos). 14.7% alcohol. Decant two hours. 96 at the moment, and drink soon.

  • Last bottle. This one was excellent. Drinking at peak. Classic Cali Cab-dominant Bordeaux blend. Fruit still very much evident enveloped by oak.

  • ORC

From a magnum. An awesome and large Cabernet which is likely at it s peak. Amazing nose of flowers for the age (21 years) quite a nose. On the palate the wine has wond faul acidity, in check tannin and overall good balance.

  • Regular dinner group (@ JvT): Very perfumed and floral bouquet. On the palate autumn impressions, a firm amount of sweetness and also beautiful acidity, soft sweet spices and fully mature tannin. This wine is at its peak now.

  • About one year later than the last bottle, and this time the cork crumbled upon opening. Smooth and silky; however the fruit (or lack there of) was missing. Perhaps bottle variation. In any case, drink up! Rating a 94 by bumping up a few points to reflect potential storage issues
