  • Labour Day dinner at NVNA. Tasted blind. Drank in Conterno Sensory.
Appearance light fine sediment, pale intensity, garnet colour. Thin legs.
Nose medium+ intensity, with aromas of sous bois earth, cured meat, hawthorn, dried cherry fruit. Developed.
On the palate, dry, medium+ acidity, medium alcohol (13%), completely resolved tannins, still medium+ body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of savoury sous bois, salty meaty core, light chocolate, light spice, sweet red cherries. Long finish.
Very good quality. Guesses were immediately for early 1990s vintage. My first guess was Clos Vougeot with residual thoughts about NSG 1er closer to the Vosne side.
Drinking at peak now. Bottle good provenance apparently ex-cellar and very high fill-level.

  • Birthday Dinner 2015 (Mitzo): Pretty decent, this was far more advanced and expressive and more in keeping with the 1989 vintage than the reserved, understated bottle that I had a couple of months back. It was the most masculine of the three Burgundy 1er Crus we had tonight, showing more rugged tones that were right at home in a classic NSG. This started with big nose of ripe dark cherries and blackberries, dusty earth and mineral tones with just a little bit of spice on the sides. A very masculine, very NSG bouquet. The palate echoed that very nicely as well, with a rich, ripe mouthful of black cherries and dark berries almost showing a liquered edge, and then notes of earth and mineral pulling away into a strong finish. This was a big wine, with an extracted thickness that put it in real contrast with the lighter Chambolle and Volnay wines earlier in the night. In spite of a velvety feel to its tannins, this actually came across as a bit rustic, even brutish. The lack of finesse aside though, it was actually decent. It is drinking well enough now, but I would not keep it for much longer – this does not seem to have the structure or freshness to go the long haul.

  • Beautiful and textbook burg nose, cherry red fruit and sous bois. Elegant, masculine body with sweet red fruit. Finishes with good minerality and just the slightest hint of residual tannin.

  • Dim Sum Club at Paradise Pavilion (Paradise Pavilion, MBFC): Georges Noellat 1989 NSG Boudots. Unusually reserved for a 1989, with stone and earth and mineral on the nose along with a subtle little whiff of sweet black cherries and orange peels. Not giving much at the moment. The palate had nice proportions to it, having a fresh balance and a fine-boned tannin structure that gave a certain finesse and precision to otherwise subtle flavours of black cherries and blackberries. It seemed just a bit austere past the midpalate and into a minerally, slightly spicy finish, more reminiscent of a 1988 than a 1989 I thought, but altogether quite pleasant. This still has some time to go yet, although I am not sure how much it will improve even then. A solid if not quite inspiring wine.

  • Georges Noellat Tasting (pre-2010) (Crystal Wines, Singapore): Deep complex nose of predominantly red fruits. Secondary on the palate with a rather sour finish. Cognac-like was what came to mind. Drink up as this lacks much energy and stuffing now.
