Mid shoulder fill, cork soaked through and really needed the Durand. Rusty ruby, notes of angostura bitters and amaro, redcurrant. Somewhat vegetal with a bit of metallic brett, but totally drinkable. This was opened to celebrate some dear friends from the 80 vintage. Well past peak

Was lucky to extract cork in one go with Durand. Only the top 1cm where it had been pinched by the collar of the bottle was dry and in tact. Decanted and served immediately. Small quantity of fine grained sediment. Wine was light garnet in colour, with a brown rim. Nose was med- with mulberry and a vegetal note and was similar in the mouth after a sweet entry. Initial tannins disappeared. Thin bodied and light, high acidity. Enjoyable but unremarkable and not going to improve. Similar but not nearly as concentrated as the 1978 Haut Marbuzet tasted recently, Montrose's neighbour, in a better vintage.

Had a half bottle tonight at Schwarzer Adler/Kaiserstuhl. Fantastic riped, fresh, not heavy but complex. no long finish, but great nose. Joyful to the last drop.

Dark purple red. Closed, but fruity bouquet with oak and black fruits. A lot of tannin and even more acidity. Full bodied. Very thick. Oak and ripe cassis juice. Long lingering aftertaste with some bitterness. Enormously powerful and great wine which is by far not ready for drinking. On the other hand I wonder if the enormous acidity will ever evolve to a more pleasant one. Difficult wine. I score it for its merits now, but in time it might go up……or down. (In 1986 I did not have experience enough with wines like this.)
