  • Moderately translucent yet remarkably deep and dark color. Very powerful, expressive and even lightly perfumed nose with aromas of very ripe dark fruit, meaty and even greasy notes, smoke, licorice, some alcohol, a little barnyard, a hint of oak and a touch of blue flowers. Very full-bodied and obviously rather ripe on the palate with concentrated flavors of peppery spice, lightly dried figs, ripe dark plums, some chocolate and cocoa oak, a little raspberry and a hint of alcohol heat. Tannins are quite noticeable, but the acidity feels rather low, making the mouthfeel quite smooth and velvety. The finish is quite warm and rather modest in length with flavors of black pepper-driven spice, soft and sunny dark fruits, some chocolate oak and a hint of garrigue.

This is obviously a bigger and bulkier example of Southern Rhône reds, but still nothing that would make it outperform its peers. The weight and concentration here is impressive and the tannins give the wine some welcome firmness, but still it feels a bit too oaky and low-acid to be anything really memorable. Perhaps a wine from a cooler vintage and with more cellar age could convince me? Nevertheless, at 7,50€ for a 12 cl glass this was a nice drop. Good but not great.

  • Mouth-puckeringly tannic at this point, but already enjoyable. Good fruit and acidity. Try again in 1-2 years.
