  • Decanted for one hour. Nose of blackberry, currant, tobacco, graphite, anise and dried herbs. Red and black fruit, tobacco, graphite and dried herbs on the palate. Very long, pure finish. Medium to full bodied. This was a gorgeous bottle, right in its sweet spot. Served with steak Diane.

  • Beautiful nose with stewed red and blue fruits. The palate is dominated by red currant, raspberry and notes of tobacco leaf. Well balanced with ample acidity to complement the fruit. Very good showing for this vintage.

  • Coravin. Deep ruby, youthful color; medium-plus intensity aromatics, blackcurrant, a bit of tobacco and cedar; full bodied, tannins are well integrated, just a touch of excess heat on the palate, medium acidity, some primary black fruits but not yet much tertiary character; medium length finish. Seems largely unchanged from my bottle a year ago, which wasn't quite as strong as 3+ years ago. I have many more bottles to try about one a year, though I'm hoping peak is still ahead. 90
1 hour air: The bit of excess alcohol has started to integrate, and overall this drinks quite nicely. I think this will continue to improve as it develops over the next decade.
Remainder of the bottle: As when opened previously, and overall a solid bordeaux and St. Julien though seems like it will still improve with age as it develops more tertiary character.

  • Dark and brooding, with a bit of heat. Still plenty of tannin left. Black saturated fruit. A bit monolithic. Not much nuance or complexity.

  • As per note from 3 months ago, and just to reiterate that it really needs the time in the decanter to come to life. It is an excellent drink and great value for money.

(lt Branaire-Ducru) Grab Bag Dear Friends, I suppose this could have been a second Friday Special (it seems we've had two lately) or a "free for all" special but let's call it a grab bag of interesting wine, most at prices that are eye-opening indeed. All are directly from the source with perfect provenance. Have a good weekend everyone - new TN's out next week and an update on the website chat room (we're getting close). - Jon Rimmerman 2006 Anselmet "Muller Thurgau" (bianco) This is an insane price - usually line-priced with the Chardonnay. 2004/2006 Anselmet "Petit Rouge" STRICT LIMIT 3/person Think the Le Prisonnier is interesting? (Chateau Branaire-Ducru St Julien) Not very expressive, but with sweet, blackcurranty fruit on the nose. Attractive palate. Restrained, elegant, with appealing texture. The acidity is a little low, and there is quite a show of tannins. Again this should show some improvement in the cellar.
