  • Opened by Mark. 4th time I have had this. These 4th generation growers have been producing their own Champagne since 1929 and are located in the town of Chouilly. They own 18 ha spread across 40 parcels. Total production is about 7000 cases but 4000 of them are sold 'sur latte' to negociants. Only 10% of their production is exported. This wine is 100% Chardonnay and 100% Grand Cru from Chuoilly in the North end of the Cote des Blancs. 1000 cases made. Aged 4 years before disgorgement. 6 gm/ltr of sugar. Clear light yellow color. A clean and precise sparkler. Cheesy nose. Citrus notes and very fresh at 11 years old. Strong bead. The fruitiest of the 3 Special clubs opened. 90-91 points

  • This was the strangest bottle of champagne I have ever had. At first I thought it may have been just flawed but over the evening I had several wine people tell me how interesting it was. It was called the “bourbon” champagne because just smelling the bottle bling you would guess this was a shot of bourbon. Same with initial sniff in a white wine glass.

On the palate the bourbon like wood note was still the most omnipresent taste but some citrus fruit and a touch of mineral with a touch of sweetness adding to the Bourbon flavor.

We theorized that the makers may have purchased a used one year old bourbon barrel to age the wine used in the diosage as there was just no other way we could imagine a wine getting that specific charred American Oakes whiskey aroma and flavor.

While interesting and I did have two pours this wasn’t how I like my champagne or sparkling wine. Just bizarre.
