  • Les Barres vertical for 冬至 (Chicago, IL): Whoa. So different from the last bottle I had of this. Really mushroomy and truffly, with some moderate pyrazine notes. Very clean -- soil and earth tones, for sure, but no animal funk or stuff like that (and definitely no manure!). The palate is very lean though, it's very cool and whatever fruit this might have had has long since dissipated.

  • Blinds (Chicago, IL): Served double blind. Asparagus on the nose. Thin, mean, weedy, and green, for a hot second I thought this could have been 2011 red Burgundy. If you look for it, there's a bit of bell pepper here. There aren't many tannins left here, but this is incredibly thin and acidic on the palate. I guessed that this was around 10 years old, but should have known better as no vintage in the last 10 years anywhere in the world could have been so unripe.

  • A beautiful old wine holding up quite well. It benefited from a one hour plus decant. The lighter side of Chinon in taste. The fruits are quite mellow and the forest floor and pig pen is gentle. It is unmistakenly Chinon. This was a joy to drink. I wouldn’t say it is dropping off, but probably in a flat line. My fear would be waiting too many more years will drop out the remaining fruit. I only see two on CT and one is my other, so this isn’t much of a PSA. Yes, I would rebuy.

  • Dinner in Orlando (Robert's House): This bottle highlights the value of library releases. Amazing length, depth, and complexity. Such a great combination of earthy red fruits, & dried florals. This bottle shows the potential of older Chinon - while they are delicious young, they can age for quite some time, too.

  • Fabulous bottle, shows what cab franc from this region can do with age. Surprising freshness and intensity to this 38 year old wine. Nose dominated by dark cherry, blackberry, white pepper, tar, and light licorice with charred meat and damp earth in the background. Very much of the earth on the palate, there is a vibrant darkness here that I don't experience with most other vintages.
