Looked like a Syrah in the glass (dark, almost black), but that's where the simple similarities ended.
Cool and more tart cherry on the nose with a crisp, acidic and light mouthfeel. No roundness of tannins here or big alcohol of a typical Syrah.
While there were no hints of meat, there was a slight hint of smokiness that brought this back to thinking it might be a Syrah. What's in the glass really makes you think as you work your way through the bottle. Extremely cerebral wine.

Dark purple color with bright rims. Darker and deeper on the nose, with black cherries, currants, lots of loam and cedar, a bit of anise as well. Full-bodied with an incredibly silky texture. Fine tannins meet crisp acid. All sorts of red and black cherries and currants, equally matched with distinct olive, mushroom and tobacco flavors. The earthy aspects of this wine are really attractive. Integrated alcohol and moderate toast. Drinking well now right out of the bottle, but I’m sure this will improve over the next five+ years. Gorgeous stuff, and so elegant. I’d love to throw this in as a ringer in a blind Northern Rhone tasting.

Vintage Imports Tasting (World Cafe Live, Philadelphia): Incredibly pure and clean Syrah. Cool climate magic featuring bright purple fruits, flowers. I normally like my Syrah to have some gaminess, which this did not have, but it was so delicious I didn't really care.
