Community Tasting Notes (1)

  • Saturday, March 13, 2004 After the disappointment of the Spottswoode last Thursday evening, I took assessment of all of my domestic cabs prior to 1991 thinking I’d best drink up and worried that most, if not all of them would have gone the way of the Spottswoode. Nose of dust and cassis from the start. Those notes remained constant providing the structure to the bouquet as other elements came and went, such as cedar, black olives and blackberry. Sweet red fruit from the attack and which carried to the finish. The finish faded quickly at first, but as the wine found its feet, it took on a much longer supporting role to the wine. Black olives, blackberry, licorice and some cherry notes appeared. Very good balance of fruit, tannins and acidity. The very fine tannins are well integrated. Medium body leaning to the lighter side. A tad hot on the finish, but nothing more than a nit. Only some shadow sediment on the side of the bottle. This wine cost me all of $11.50! I wish I had a case of this for everyone of those OTH ‘89 Spottwoodes! With blue-black beefsteaks seared in a cast iron skillet. 3/13/04.
