Amazingly, still a beast. Double decanted at noon and still needed more time by the time we got to it at dinner. Great depth and structure. Loads of sweet Giacosa fruit, but still does not seem anywhere near fully mature. Score more on promise than pure enjoyment tonight (though it was excellent). I won't try another for a number of years.

Decanted 5 hours and I think it might have benefitted from more. Terrific nose and great color. Nose has black cherry, rose, tar, and really rips from the glass. Really nice, lots of fruit and long long finish. Had a bit of barn funk, maybe bret that I was bothered by initially, but it largely blew off. Really terrific once that passed. I bet would be better tomorrow if we didn’t kill the bottle... Still fairly tannic and I think improves in time.

G. Conterno v. B. Giacosa (Maialino): Drying red berry fruit, leathery and smoky. A swirl gives a slightly fresher glimpse of dried flowers. Actually this is opening quite nicely. Coming back to this the nose here is excellent, highly expressive and intricate with great dried roses.

White Truffle Dinner: Not a sound bottle. Oxidized, dirty and tired.

Fifteenth Annual White Truffle Dinner (Lake Bluff, IL): I have not had this wine in at least a decade, but remember it as a great wine. Tonight's bottles seemed poorly stored and oxidized.
