Community Tasting Notes (9) Median Score: 93 points

  • The fruit has turned mostly flowery, with some thin raspberry/cherry. The balance of the front is quite nice and smooth with a light to medium body. Those flavors showed throughout and blended in the middle and finish with a quite fine but very dry tannin. Had this for our daughter's 40th Birthday and have four more to follow over the coming years. I look forward to it.

  • Stag's Leap Library Wine Tasting (Heritage Gallery - Chicago IL): Walk around tasting, all direct from the winery. Muted and slightly tired, but maybe it's just that is pales in comparison to the amazing 1995 just tasted.

  • What an incredible wine. At nearly 40 years old, this wine is still kicking with plenty of fruit, a very nice savory quality, lots of complexity, fully resolved oak, and perfect balance. The nose is defined by tertiary aromas of mushroom, umami, wet forest floor, earth, garrigue. Primary and secondary flavors are those of a classic, mature Napa cab with ripe, slightly stewed, but still lively dark fruits. Blackberry, brambleberry, black cherry, and plums with cigar smoke, leather, pepper, and just a hint of green bell pepper. A little bit of fine grained tannin remain with just the right amount of acid keeping everything in balance.

  • From an excellent looking bottle with a low neck fill, this wine had a deep red center and oranging rims. The medium+ intensity nose offered up black cherries, coco powder, plum, red dust, and a hint of ethyl acetate. It certainly improved in the decanter.

In the mouth, this wine had a gorgeous silky mouthfeel with light, rounded tannin and light acidity. It was a bit short when first opened. However, after 4+ hours the tannin slowly developed to endow the wine with with very good length. This wine was not particularly complex and tasted filtered.

This wine was quite nice in the mouth but the touch of VA in the nose was a bit off-putting. It is easy to see the stunning potential of Stag's Leap when it is hitting on all cylinders. Unfortunately, this bottle was not there.

While this is my only data point for this particular vintage, I would not be overly optimistic about aging this wine further. I would be inclined to pop the cork to see what you have.

  • Tasted at Press Napa Valley wine dinner. Selected by somm scott white. Strong offering. Beautiful color and texture. So young ! Red currant, cedar and a leathery earthy aroma in the nose. Rich palate of similar flavor profile. Long finish. Slightly outshone by the 82 groth but right there in terms of enjoyment. Highly recommended.
