Chocolate and cherry, with some spice, licorice and a touch of leather. Elegant and nicely balanced and proportioned. It has a silky mouthfeel, fine acidity and plenty of savoury traits.

WSET Level 2 Class; 9/13/2018-11/4/2018 (The Texas Wine School): Very good quality Rioja that is clear, deep garnet in color. On the nose, it's clean with a medium intensity. It has aromas and flavors of strawberry, red cherry, red currant, sweet cedar, leather, tobacco, nutmeg, cloves, and definitely some meatiness. On the palate, it's dry with medium acidity, medium tannins, full body, and a long finish.
This was an exquisite Rioja! The oak was very nicely integrated while still keeping the wonderful red fruits, especially for it's age! Excellent secondary and tertiary flavors and great balance! Could use a little more intensity but still great and will still be good in a few years.

Monday Night Blinds (Home (Noe st)): (blind) Medium plus ruby color. Elevated intensity, developed (sweet figgy notes) nose, slight VA and balsamic notes - ripe blackberry, slight tomato, black cherry - cinnamon spice - slight new oak - very developed, sweet nutty notes, tamari - slight earth, savory damp earth tones
Dry, full-bodied, with 14% (actually 13.5%) alcohol, medium plus acid, and medium tannins (very ripe and softened) - more ripe black fruit - blackberry, chocolate-covered blackcurrant - well-integrated oak - not 100% new - leather, sweet cinnamon spice, slight smoked meat on the palate.
Full-bodied reds - Rioja - seems like a good example of modern rioja - savory oak integration, bright acidity, ripened tannins. - CA syrah - could fit - has elevated acid, smoked meat, black fruit, modest use of oak. - CA cab - lacks the tannic structure and pure black fruit tones of CA cab - no pyrazines - CA merlot - the acid seems a bit too bright, but the fruit could fit.
Final call: Rioja reserva, mix of french and american, 2012.
Actual: 2005 conde valdemar gran reserva rioja, 13.5% 100% French oak.
