  • Vary deep dark cherry color with only pretty little translucency - remarkably dark for an Alsatian Pinot Noir! Very rich and complex nose with ripe and somewhat robust aromas of sous-bois, sweet cranberry fruit, some animal notes (leather and manure), a little spicy oak and a hint of blackpepper. Quite rich and surprisingly extracted on the palate with medium-to-moderate acidity and medium body. Flavors of peppery spice, dried herbs, ripe cranberries, sweet dark cherries and some rich oak spice. Although there is power and complexity, this wine feels even a bit too ripe for an Alsatian Pinot Noir - actually something not unlike Australian Pinot Noir, to be frank. The acidity really does not stand up that good against the rich fruit department. The finish of much more fresh and acid-driven than the midpalate with persistent flavors of ripe cranberry, sour cherry, some sweet spiciness and a hint of earthy Pinosity.

A surprisingly big - almost even monolithic - for an Alsatian Pinot Noir, but maybe even a bit too much. Not a bad Pinot Noir, but you can definitely sense the hot vintage, as the wine seems to lack focus and definition in lieu of rich fruit and pretty heavy body. A bit too much ripe fruit and oak for my taste - probably the wine might show better in a cooler vintage. Or perhaps the wine might turn out better after some years if it shed away some of its baby fat?
