  • It’s astonishing to see how the 1949 Lagrange has evolved, aromatically mature yet still with plenty of muscle. The nose is forthcoming immediately and it’s striking how earthy it is with a dense, damp cedar much and black trumpet mushroom quality. There’s still plenty of sweet, dense raspberry fruit to balance the earth, though; this isn’t a wine that has dried out by a long shot. An appealing evergreen subtlety adds freshness and interest. The tannin totally belies this wine’s 73 years of age - its structure shows like a wine decades younger! Yet the tannin is balanced by beautiful body and a strikingly fresh acidic zip. The brevity of the finish is perhaps a reminder that Lagrange in this era was not reputed to perform at the level it does today, yet this is inarguably a lovely glass of mature Bordeaux with fruit to spare.

NB very top shoulder, excellent cork, recently brought from France.

  • Flickinger Warehouse Tasting (Chicago, IL): One of those wines that is more interesting than good at this point. Devoid of fruit. Lots of tobacco, austere, and acidic. I found this a compelling historical curiosity to try, but as far as a beverage, there's not much that's enjoyable left in the bottle.

  • Flickinger "Significant Cellar" Tasting (Chicago IL): Tasting, brief note. Very advanced old Bordeaux with some tobacco and earth elements, still just moderately interesting.
