Community Tasting Notes (3)

  • I keep posting notes on this wine even though I think I'm the only one who owns any! Who drinks 20 year old verdicchio? Well, if it's San Lorenzo, then you should. Popped and poured this bottle into Zalto Universal stems. A few years ago I would have decanted this for 2 hours, but it's turned a corner more recently and the air is not good for it any more. Right from the bottle, though, this was lively and fresh, with plenty of that gorgeous honey and lavender and dried apricot that seems to go hand in hand with some herbaceousness. The creamy mouthfeel brings it all together into a handy food wine that did the trick with spinach gnocchi in brown butter with ricotta salata. It's about time to be drinking the remainder of these, though they are still showing nicely. The 2004s should be coming online any minute now.

  • There's been some inconsistency in these bottles in the last year or so - and with 20 year old verdicchio, who's surprised? - but this one was spot on. Dried orange peel, honey, saline elements, a little meatiness, something akin to brown butter with herbs. Great depth through the mid and a finish that fades only slowly away. Such a strange creature, this wine, but there's almost nothing that can do what it does with food. It wasn't actually as great a pairing with our crab pasta as the Borgo del Tiglio also opened, but it was the more complete wine.

  • This is such a wild ride of a wine when it's showing well! Bottles often need at least an hour of decanting, then boy oh boy it can be weirdly great. Dried fruits, some oxidation, plenty of acid, surprising richness...reminds me a little of aged Borgo de Tiglio, though not exactly. Maybe just because they are my two favorite Italian whites. This can do pairing jobs that would stymie other wines. The 2001s are starting to get a little sleepy, so I'd drink them if you have them - you are sitting on gold if you do!
