  • 100% Malvasia Istrana from the Dis Cumieris vineyard. Average vine age 5 years. Harvested in late September 2010. The grapes are first crushed and cold-soaked, after which they are fermented for a month in cool temperatures with selected yeasts. The wine is aged for 7 months on the lees in stainless steel tanks, no MLF. The wine is left to settle and clarify naturally. Bottled in early June 2011. 14,45% alcohol, 6,3 g/l acidity and pH 3,4. Total production 9,641 bottles.

Pale-to-medium-deep lemon-yellow color. Ripe, juicy and somewhat waxy nose with aromas of ripe peach and beeswax, some vague spicy notes, a little bit of nutty complexity, light funky nuances, green hints of hop cones and cilantro and a saline touch of ocean air. The wine feels concentrated, somewhat evolved and quite firm on the palate with a full body and a bit understated flavors of ripe red apples and woolly notes of lanolin, some evolved umami and waxy tones, a little bit of peach, light mineral notes of wet rocks, a nutty hint of almond and a hop-like touch of herby greenness. The mouthfeel is a bit oily, but the rather high acidity keeps the wine nicely in balance. The finish is dry, long and savory with a balanced albeit a bit reticent aftertaste of red apples, some cantaloupe, light saline mineral notes, a little bit of green herby character, a nutty hint of almond and a touch of chalk dust.

A pleasant and somewhat evolved Friuli white that feels quite big and concentrated - as is typical of Vie di Romans whites - but at the same time somewhat neutral and understated in taste. There is some aged complexity and depth to the flavors, but the overall feel lacks the intensity and vibrancy that was present in all the other Vie di Romans wines we tasted. This was just a nice aged white wine but nothing special to write home about and thus not really worth the 43€. The wine received zero points from the nine participants in our tasting of 12 Ščurek and Vie di Romans wines, making it finish on shared last place.
