  • 35% Mazuelo (Carignane), 35% Syrah and 30% Garnacha. Medium (+) ruby with a garnet hue. The nose is clean, intense, developing, with the generous oak treatment (18 months on French Oak barrels) overlying the black fruit aromas like a velvety blanket. Black berries, blue plums, dried Mediterranean herbs and lots of sweet baking spices which are actually more reminiscent of American oak than French oak. The palate is dry and on the soft side, with medium acidity, medium medium (+), ripe sweet tannins and high alcohol (15%). The alcohol, however, does not come across as that hot. Full-bodied, with medium (+) flavor intensity and a nice, slightly bitter, herbal finish. Overall, this is a fairly balanced, albeit hedonistic, wine, with a rich and velvety mouthfeel. It is drinking well now and should show well for several more years. It is not likely to significantly improve with aging, however. This is very international in style and strikes me as a great wine for cocktailing. A super value at Costco at under $30.00

  • Aromas of medium+ intensity are dense and reminiscent of spiced fruit cake with plum sauce, fig paste, prune and date aromas with allspice, cinnamon and clove. Ancillary aromas of violet pastilles, vanilla, coconut, blackboard herbs chocolate and tobacco with hints of star anise.
On the palate this is full bodied and dense showing medium-plus ripe sweet tannins and medium-plus acidity and alcohol. Flavors echo the nose and are loaded with baking spices, plum compote, fig paste, chocolate, vanilla, minerality, dark violets, cigar tobacco, coconut, blackberry liquor and black licorice. The mouthfeel is velvety with excellent density across the mid-palate before the long, grippy finish plays out lingering again on fruitcake notes.

  • Q1 Tasting - Spanish wines (The Apartment): Wine #17: this definitely suffered a bit from being the last wine of the tasting (except for the dessert), but I still enjoyed it. A young wine with good cranberry flavor. Could have prob used a decant, but we were out of decanters by the time we got to this one. Did benefit from being open for awhile as it was the last wine and had some time to air.
