  • The saleslady breathlessly described how this wine didn't even belong in the store, it had been shipped to them by mistake when they convinced the importer to part with a few bottles of the relatively more available white. The proprietor of the ancient estate reenacts some Medieval ritual where he drives barrels of wine on an ox cart to market, so you can imagine what he must do in the vineyard. I think she said it was gamay, but I'll confirm after I'm done with my note.

Palish garnet color, nose that's a hypothetical melange of gamay, pinot and light Loire cab franc. It features beautiful red berry fruit, slatey minerality, and dirt floor. It's supple and lively in the mouth, pulsing with energy and mouth-watering acids. Blind, I don't think gamay would have entered my mind, to be honest. The 12.5% alcohol insures drinkability. More likely Loire pinot or Arbois?

Well that's a silly game, second guessing a non-existent blind tasting. Let's find out what's really going on.

Ok, so it is 100% gamay from 75 year old vines farmed biodynamically and with all the trappings of retro winemaking at its most inspired. No added sulfur. In one search the writer claimed the vineyard has been continuously farmed for 1100 years and could be the oldest organic vineyard in France. Ghosts of monks probably chant over the sleeping wines. It's worth googling to see some of the background yourself. If you like delicate and expressive and super-natural, you'll love this if you can find it.
