  • Amber-gold in color. Aromas of apricot and tangerine marmalade, baking spices, creme caramel and vanilla. Extremely powerful on the palate showing sweet and viscous orchard fruits, orange citrus, spice and good acidity that keeps everything in balance and very, very long finish. This is drinking very well now.

  • Dark burnt orange color. Immediately open nose of marzipan, apricot, pineapple, honey, and those pears in heavy syrup you get in the can. Huge blast of honeyed fruits, an endless kaleidoscope that I can't put into words. It was rich and sweet but had such great balance because of the massive acids that penetrated deep and the wine seemed almost weightless because of it. A finish that went on endlessly and left you breathlessly staring at the glass. I drank this without any dessert or cheese, who needed it? Holy mackeral! Drink now and for the next 30 years.

  • Light and elegant, with fabulous honeysuckle and lavender aromas. Paired very well with scapllops and foie gras, but the 2001 Rieussec outshone it by a couple points.

  • Big Dinner with some Big Wines (Little Giant): Hands down the most profound dessert wine I have tasted, which may relect more on my experience than on its greatness. The nose is a dessert in and of itself with swirling honied stoned fruit (peaches, apricots) and pears, exotic spices and vanilla (real vanilla-not vanillin-if you know what I mean). It's like candy in the mouth and then the acidity grabs just when you thought you were going into a diabetic coma and saves the day. A perfect balance of syrupy sweetness with an acidity that kept lifting the fruit along the ridiculously long finish. I was still tasting this as I walked out of the restaurant. One of those wines your just glad to have said you tried.

  • Decadence II (Tetsuya's, Sydney, Australia): A sparkling, golden yellow in colour. A complex nose of honey, peaches, botrytis, apricot, pear, spices and creme brule. Palate had good clarity and depth of flavour. Supreme concentrated richness and sweetness but there is a core of acid in the background slightly struggling to keep up. No doubt a crowd pleaser, and almost certainly the best Pinot Gris I've ever had. Will it age? I'm not sure it will, but I'm also not sure it needs to since it is a joy to drink right now.
