  • What an incredible bottle of wine from a much maligned vintage. Even better than three years ago and with plenty of life left. On the nose it takes me to the spice aisle at an Asian grocery store I used to visit. Vivid aromas of licorice, anise and other exotic spices, but in amounts that tease and not overpower the senses. The palate is mouthwateringly beautiful with perfect texture and lovely Volnay elegance. If you really want to find fault, perhaps the wine is missing an extra gear in the mid palate, and it doesn’t quite come together as wonderfully as it might have in a better year, but this is an excellent bottle of wine in any year.

  • 2011 may have been a lousy vintage overall, but not for this wine. The nose is so ferrous that one might think of Pommard, but the palate is so delicate and seductive that it could only come from a few miles south (or Chambertin).

Day 2, there is still an abundance of red fruit including cherry and strawberry, and a hint of mushroom and forest floor. If this is what Pascal & Reyanne do with Chênes in a weak year, I can’t wait to see what they do in great years like 2005 and 2015.
