  • Lime green color. Fresh and very green-toned nose with aromas of chopped herbs, stony minerality, some grassy character and a hint of almond. No fruit to speak of. The wine feels initially quite full-bodied and even somewhat dull on the palate with modest-to-medium acidity, but then the acidity slowly creeps in, making the wine quite crisp with the stony minerality of the wine. The fruit department is pretty simple and somewhat lacklustre with flavors of yellow apples, some fresh aromatic herbs and a hint of fresh pear. The finish is refreshing, mineral and moderately long with flavors of herbs, wet stones and a hint of apple peel bitterness.

A concentrated and ripe, but also surprisingly green-toned Silvaner with a lot of emphasis on the herbal elements and the minerality, but surprisingly little on the fruit and the acidity. This is a different kind of beast from the usually so neutral examples of Silvaners normally produced in Rheinhessen, but it is very unlike those concentrated and powerful wines of Franken as well. Overall there's a lot of interesting stuff going on here, but the wine still feels a bit awkward, lacking balance and freshness. I'm not fully convinced. Priced according to its quality at 12,30€.

  • Still young and yeasty. Becomes clearer and denser after an hour or so. A good silvaner that still needs time. Doesn't have the 2011's power. 2nd day: flatter. Nowhere near the splendid 2011.
