Northern Rhone with Jordan Mackay (SF Wine Center): Medium straw with reflections of gold. Reductive, mostly neutral, with underripe white peach, peach pit, fresh apricot, almond, and a hint of saffron - possible botrytis? (2011 had some disease pressure). Medium body, medium plus alcohol - 13.5%? (correct), medium acid, moderate phenolic bitterness. Viscous oiliness on the palate. Textbook.

Much better than in Montpellier; here at home it shows fresher with more minerals and acidity, and there is significant development in the glass allowing some gras and locale to show through. Could be interesting to see it again in a couple of years.

Somewhat a heavy hitter, creamy texture, mineral notes, some garrigue at the end, and acidity enough to keep the balance. Good balance, lacking elegance, though. Drink young. With BP at L'Artichaut, Montpellier.

Rich, ripe, full, honeyed. Classic accompaniment to roast chicken. Satisfying, not overpowering.

Summer 14 Roadtrip -- Cass House (Cass House Inn & Restaurant, Cayucos CA): Ripe Marsanne with Roussanne . Boozy and accommodating with brown roasted halibut. Mild enough but not gentle; a little ponderous.
