Method: opened 30 minutes prior; Grassl 1855; cellar temp
Look: deep ruby; no bricking
Nose: jammy raspberry, strong cedar and graphite, a touch of clove and nutmeg; very expressive and well integrated
Palate: ripe to jammy raspberry, light dried herb; long- and strong finish of cedar, graphite, black pepper, dried herbs, cocoa nib; dry; full- body; medium+ finer but firm tannin; high- acidity
Overall thoughts: Great, fairly serious Cab with good fruit balanced out with cedar, graphite, etc. and serious structure (including surprisingly high acidity). Not quite as well put together as the bottle I had a year ago (sourced the bottles from 2 different places, so who knows), but still great.
Killer with Flannery hanger steak

Decanted for 30 minutes. Nose of blackberry, black cherry, currant, milk chocolate, vanilla and spice. Black and red fruit, chocolate, dried herbs and graphite on the palate. Finishes with good persistence. Full bodied. Served with reverse seared picanha steak and black truffle butter.

Palate: blackberry, tobacco; long finish of graphite, dry tobacco, fine dried herbs, light pepper; dry; full- body; medium+ fine velvety tannin; medium acidity
Overall thoughts: This is a pretty seamless wine with great structure with wonderful velvety tannins. This is sophisticated and wonderfully balanced. Reading some of these note, I wouldn't think I'd love this wine so much, but the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. Excellent wine!
Wasn't impressed on first night but really filled out and the graphite/minerality appeared to give it depth and substance. I was torn on whether this was past peak (certainly thought so upon opening) or another example of a Mike Smith wine that simply drinks better (for my palate) young than at 10 years old as my last bottle 5 years ago was more dynamic. Either way, it was closer to singing on day #2 and very enjoyable.
