  • This seemed to be a good one. I am not a Pinot drinker but this tasted as expected. Perhaps drinking like it has advanced age but enjoyable.

  • So...of course, if I’m drinking Maison Ilan, there is a story behind it. AFAIK, this was the last vintage that was released and I was fortunate(?) since many never received their allocation. My first of two bottles of “Aux Charmes Haut”. This was double-capsuled (no doubt by accident) which I found amusing. The cork was perfect and one of those super premium long sort of corks. The appearance in the glass was dark garnet bordering violet and a bit cloudy. From an enjoyment perspective, Day 1 was an utter waste. Too young. The bouquet was really intriguing with loads of dark and red fruits and spice but on the palate, this was completely coiled. All structure. I pushed the cork back in and waited for another day. On Day 4, I revisited, and it was in a much better spot. Ripe plums, dark cherries, bruised strawberries, forest floor, mushrooms...in that order. Still, it came across rather rustic, in a somewhat charming sort of way...but I never really fell head over heals for it either. No shortage of structure even on Day 4 gives me the feeling that the 2013 has a lot of life ahead. My last bottle will sit in the back of the cellar for some day long in the future and then I can once again recall the tales of this flash in the pan producer and what might have been. I would hold if anyone is still hanging on to these.

  • Popped the Maison Ilan branded cork, quickly double decanted the wine, poured back into the bottle, and recorked. Opened after 1 hour for dinner with grilled chicken and basmati rice.

Poured a translucent ruby red into a glass that turned dark ruby as the wine mixed with ambient environment, which stayed comfortably at 73F.

Nose of sweet red cherries at the initial bloom. Pure and singular. As the chemical reactions progress in the glass, a different aroma was noticed, more savory, darker, but keeping the sweet cherries characteristics. Some reminiscence of sweet oak, but much faded.

Like a sluggish person just awakened from a deep slumber, the wine seemed heavy and slow to excite the palate. Here the fruit seemed to be vacillating between the spicy, vibrant red and dull, dark plum. As the dinner hours started to wind down, the wine started to pick up pace, but too little, too late. The stomach had been filled and the palate was fatigued.

This wine is hard to judge as there is potential there, but time did not stop for potential to blossom at this dinner. Then again, when the wine was priced like it was in 2013, potential was already priced in. Nevertheless, it is safe to say that the market has spoken loudly in the discounted price when potential did not materialize. The wine was fine to drink, however.

  • PNP
Nose:Red and purple fruits: cherry, plums with clove, spice and wood.
Palate: Dark red and purple fruits, some earthy gevrey funk, layers of spice and wood with medium + Acidity and medium+ finish.

Overall this was nice but i expected a bit more from its level. Enjoy!

  • Nose - underripe cherry
Mouth - rather light, fresh, and even somewhat green. Juicy and fruit forward, this is true to varietal character, an I surmise that if it were a domestic Pinot I would be pleasantly surprised.
