Cabin Weekend XVI; 3/4/2016-3/5/2016: Lacked the power of the bottle last November; the elements were there, just not the execution. Compared to the 2009 Mvemve Raats Compostella alongside, you can really see the Syrah quality coming out in this wine: purple/black fruit, peppery, more floral. Drink 2018-24

60% Syrah, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon. 24 months new French oak. Frustratingly young and tight, this delivers precise, deep notes of blackberry, dark chocolate, and, interestingly, pastel crayons. There is a just-picked freshness to the nose, not mute but obviously lacking expression in its youth. The palate is also clamped down by acidity, with sweet purple fruits breaking through on the midpalate, excellent concentration, and a reverberating finish of wild blackberry juice and massive, leafy tannins. Needs 3+ years. 93-95. Drink 2017-2026.

Eye: dark reddish purple. Nose: cherries, herbal, vanilla, smoke, depth. Palate: spices, nice fruit, well rounded, long finish. Brilliant!
