Community Tasting Notes (13) Avg Score: 95.3 points

  • Big, Bold and ... Boring? ABV = 15.2%, still purple, very intense. Some nice Syrah flavor is the best part. I can’t imagine how or if a decade of age has softened it up although the tannins are mild. Lots of blueberry and black cherry. That’s about it. I can understand how some people adore these California fruit bombs but I am not one of them 😢.

  • I am not going to render a numerical score as I believe I may be an outlier on this well crafted wine.
Removed from a 54 degree active and let slow ox/warm for about 40 minutes. Explosive nose of blackberry liquor, bramble, black licorice, and faint cinnamon candy.

I just think my palate no longer appreciates this mega extracted style of wine from Alban. The black fruit is extremely ripe ( similar to SQN), and borders on a port like style. The rich fruit is very expressive with blackberry, persimmon, and more melted licorice. Maybe this needs another 5-7 years to tame the beast, but alas this was my only bottle. I was just hoping for greater acidity levels to balance the wine out.

We left one quarter of the bottle at the restaurant as both the wife and I were overwhelmed with the richness here.

  • Brought by a friend to our monthly blind CWG-D the other night. He decanted it for 2 hours despite the winery recommended only one. The wine was to hot and in your face at first, when the night was ending it was really ready and more balanced. It was not a favorite at the tasting but this remained us there’s a wine for everyone!

  • A year since we tried this last (Papies 95) and continues to show its beauty and consistent form.
This is for the lovers of elegant but muscly Syrah from California like SQNs and this time was even better than last. Rich and full with the alc at 15.5% but the wine has the stuffing to carry this well. Dark fruited, herby edge, light spice but really full on the fruit but in balance and does not feel sweet or overripe. Superb 95-96 once again and a very luxurious wine

  • A very enjoyable Syrah. I can't get to the scores other have, but it was great fun to drink at the end of a night full of big wines.
