  • This beautiful Italian blend of Nebbiolo (95%) and Barbera (5%) from the Langhe region in Piedmont shows a medium garnet color. In the nose aromatic notes of rosehip, dried leather, dried plum, Turkish coffee and some sweet spices. On the palate, it offers flavors of dark cherries, dried tobacco leaves, dried mushrooms, fresh truffle, and a touch of damp slate. This medium-plus bodied wine is characterized by a lively, medium-intense acidity, with very elegant, velvety, and fully integrated tannins. It is powerful yet elegant, leaning towards a more feminine profile. The wine's fantastic structure and impressive depth showcase the quintessential Piedmont-style tertiary notes, which I greatly admire. Its overall balance is exceptional, with the fruit, tertiary notes, acidity, and tannins all harmoniously intertwined. This wine has a very long finish, leaving a dry and alluring touch on the tongue.
It is currently drinking beautifully and does not necessitate a lengthy decanting period. Simply let it loose its dust in the decanter for a few minutes. Enjoy now through 2030.
Around 10,000 bottles of this vintage were produced. (IG)

  • Explosive nose! Lanolin, leather grease, deep cherry notes, fresh berries, and a hint of tobacco. The palate is extremely refined with crisp, dry tannins, tart cherries, tobacco, hints of leather, and an amazing complexity. Simply a phenomenal wine with many years left in the tank!

GAJA is one of the few wineries to have made something that almost made me piss myself. Are their wines overpriced? Probably. Are they generally high quality? Definitely! Honestly, I've never been disappointed by a GAJA wine, though I admit there are many similarly good wines available at lower prices.

There's something special to this, though. My nose was a little stuffed that day, but I could still smell the beautiful intensity of the wine from a distance, when it was poured in the glass. It just delivered something magnificent! I don't know that I'll shell out for a bottle myself, especially since the 2016 Barbaresco is so good too, and roughly half the price, but I'd love to own one!

  • The aromas are powerful and open with a love;y contrast between a floral character and a dense inky tarry note underneath. Lovely contrast on the palate between the ripe sweet fruit and the fine but very grippy tannins. The structure is big and dominant but doesn’t hide the purity of the fruit flavour. Layered and very long indeed.
