This was a beauty from the instant the bottle was opened. Cool red fruit, captivating aged nose of red claret fruit and decayed, but fresh smelling leaves, autumnal, a little hint of earthy menthol lake water. Terrific!

Favorite of the Leoville flight, though tough to choose between this and the '26 Barton. There is a lot going on here, with earthy scents of gravel and blacktop, along with similar stuff with a more antique feel, like being in an old catacomb, and something uncannily reminiscent of, um, ladyparts sweat. On the palate, the fruit--and there is still fruit!--has some of the mulled orchard fruit type flavors of old Rioja but this still has classic Bordeaux structure; you could even call it burly and muscular. The result is an intensely interesting old claret with great definition and delineation--you can practically draw a map of everything going on here.
