  • Simple, and a little herbal for my taste, but there was some substance here. early huckleberry, tart blackberry, hint of orange peel, and a tiny amount of dark chocolate. The finish was a little brief, but for the price (free, a gift for me) a pleasant surprise.

  • Good everyday dinner wine. Actually stood up well over three days, retaining good berry and cherry tastes.

  • Given as a gift by one of my wife's banking clients. I don't often drink Merlot--not because of Sideways, but some bottlings are just a little simple for my preferences. I was, actually, surprised that I liked this wine; had it with pasta and red sauce. Then again, Lindemans is pretty consistent in terms of quality and, even if I knew nothing about the bottle I would still be willing to try based on the producer. Well, we didn't finish the bottle (didn't like it THAT much) and did the unthinkable by just corking it back and leaving it on the counter. Now, about a week or so later, I realized it was still there, so I used some to rinse out the water in my glass and decanter in preparation for tonight's bottle of Chateau Potensac (1996--and OK year and I'm just grilling up a steak before The Simpsons. See the tasting note on that later). ANYWAY...I decided to sip the remainders from the bottle since I had already checked color and aroma--both still very good though a little madeira/cooked fruit on the nose, so don't think its use as a rinse was totally insane--and was pleasantly surprised that the wine was still full of berry and tobacco and wood on the palate. With food, it would be passable after all that abuse. I wouldn't recommend EVER doing what I did to a wine you would expect to drink, but it makes me think that this 2005 merlot might have some promise after a year or two in the bottle. I may just pick up another bottle or two to keep around.

  • A very light merlot with ripe cherries and a hint of tobacco on the nose. The palate is smooth, a little sweet, and displays some subtle licorice characters. Basic, but nice.
