  • How do you rate a wine that is one of a kind? My wife and I tasted this with Juan Pablo Michelini at the winery in March 2014. All the the Zorzal wines were unique, hand-made reflections of the Gualtallary terroir at the foot of the high Andes. The Pinot Noir Porfiado stood out, however, for many reasons, not least of which is that this is BY FAR the best Pinot Noir we have had from South America. Nearly opaque garnet. It took some doing, but we were able to track down a six pack in the US. This is our first bottle: Opulent nose of black cherry, plum, mint, vanilla, dust, and cedar. Full, ripe palate of black cherry, plum, currant, blueberry, black licorice, spice, and cedar. Amazing length. High altitude acidity. Sweet tannins. It will take another year or two for the oak to fully integrate. I can't wait to open another bottle in 2017.
