  • Leaner and less generous than the 2011 Williams Selyem Sonoma Coast which I reviewed yesterday (and in all fairness is currently selling for double the price), this wine is among my favorite Red Car wines of late - I find many of them a little too "trying" - maybe its the tough locations they purposely pick almost in the Pacific Ocean - but whatever it is, they seem to all be "trying" instead of just relaxed and going with the flow. Tension in a wine can be a wonderful yin/yang thing but it can also just be annoying.

This wine is more mellow and evolved but it lacks the depth and nuance of the Williams Selyem. Its got a nice C-noir red cherry/blueberry fruit "bite" (so no flab or cola cola here) but the mid palate is flat and the finish just OK (not great). Again, as in an earlier review of this wine I did a few years back, the best thing about this wine is the nose.

Tasted over several days - better day 2 and 3 (and I changed my score to reflect this).

  • Splash decant. Very translucent towards the edge of the glass but not really bricking. Lovely fresh aromas of damsons, red cherry and dusty earth. Light and fresh on the palate, clearly a super cool climate wine. Lots of ripe red fruit and a nice bit of spice. Drinks lovely by itself but vibrant acidity makes it a good food match too. Definitely at its peak but at no risk of fading in the near term.

  • The wine looks ruby colored. The legs are medium. There is light sediment in the bottle. A full nose of cherry, forest floor and cinnamon. It tastes like cherry, forest floor, mineral/salinity and cinnamon. The body is light/medium with a polished texture. The wine finishes medium quick with mild/medium acidity. A very refined taste and feel.

  • I had trouble with this wine.

100% swan clone (noted for its upfront fragrance) on the nose this wine is BIG. It promises all sorts of unmentionable loveliness and sensual pleasure but when it hits your palate it runs for the back as fast as it can and jumps down your throat.

At that point it becomes thin and nothing special. Unlike a typical BiG C-noir that seeks to impress by coating your mouth and NEVER WASHING OUT, this one is meant to be a little more subtle. Unfortunately its all nose with little (no) follow through.

But good news - you don't bother to have to actually drink this wine, just smell it all day and you will be very very happy!!

Reviews from shills like Francois Tomas don't help advance the conversation.

  • Outstanding nose and aromatic quality. Highly perfumed, gorgeous, silky aromatics after several minutes in the glass. An excellent, refined expression of the extreme sonoma coast, this wine continues to impress throughout the meal. Everyone loved it. Simply wonderful.
