  • Prior bottle was 14 months ago and while I'd hoped it might open up a bit more, but that doesn't seem to have happened. Red and black cherry on the nose, along with spices, earth and even some tar qualities. A bit above medium bodied with red cherry upfront, moving to a mix of red and black cherry through the middle with tart red cherry behind. Acidity and tannins along with earth, spices and minerals through the back and finish. The tannins, acidity and spice notes all overpowered the fruit, more so than in my prior bottle. Overall, the wine actually felt a little more unbalanced than my prior bottle as well. Even after being open for almost 5 hours, it never quite came together. If I didn't know this was a 2009, I might have suspected it simply needed more time. But given how my prior bottle showed, my concern is the fruit might be fading out from under the structure, leaving the wine less well balanced. It's still an enjoyable bottle with good fruit and perhaps a bit too much structure. But simply didn't live up to my expectations.

  • Red cherry, red berries, earth and spices on the nose. Medium bodied (14.5% ABV) with bright and expressive red cherry upfront. Mid-body is balanced and open with touch of black cherry, but mostly red cherry and brighter red berries. Backside shows tart red cherry, trailing off to tart black cherry. Acidity and tannins provide structure and the wine finishes with earth, spices and mineral notes. Overall, shows its fruit well, but would have enjoyed a touch more depth and complexity. The elements are coming together well and it could even show a bit more improvement with time. I'll plan to open my next bottle in Q2/Q3 2022.
