  • Very dark, very suspect, but had lovely caramel, butterscotch notes, with just a hint of shrooms/earthiness from just a slight hint of oxidation. Sweet but not desert level. Good, not great. Probably has some oxy problems but drinking well. Would love to try a perfectly stored bottle of this. Hippo w/EWG 2001 wines

  • Truly magnificent Auslese. Gold amber, quite viscous, faint petrol and ripe loquat, sweet and tart, honey and mineral, Seville oranges, orange Marmalade, apple pie, with a long finish. Paired well with a Greek cheese pie and a orzo-chicken-spinach pilaf. A rare treat. 5+13+18+8.

  • Last night was the perfect time to drink this wine. Of course I first had to get at it. The cork came out fine, but there was 1/4 inch thick plug of tartrate crystals that I had to shatter in order to get any wine to pour.

Once I took care of that and let the crystals settle I took a pour. The wine was a lovely golden color, and the aromatic mixture of spice, nectarine, lime and dried leaves was a perfect expression of mature Auslese. Still quite sweet on the palate, the wine was a good match with our spicy Thai curry, and also a lovely after dinner wine where it served as a dessert.

If you have this wine I would recommend opening one, as it's in a great place.

  • EWG - 2001: A Taste Odyssey (Conrad Green's Abode): A striking amount of rich golden color. Ripe stone fruits on the nose, mostly apricot. Fat and tangy sticking to the interior of my mouth. Medium sugar and a touch of diesel. This drank like a late harvest wine from another region though I'm not certain I really detected any botrytis characters. A very different expression of German Riesling than I am used to but it was very good. Maybe a touch more acidity would have driven this a bit better but it was very tasty.
