  • Very partial to this bottling apparently. Everything I want in a value spatlese. Rich but good acidity. Quaffable but still intellectual.

  • Prior bottle was nearly 14 months ago and this wine continues to show quite well. Nose shows peach and a lot of mixed, tropical qualities. Medium bodied with a mixture of white and gold peach upfront. Retains some good, acidity-derived brightness up front. Mid-body shows richness with lots of tropical notes (especially white pineapple and mango), but its deftly balanced by the acidity and tart orange and lemon on the backside. Acidity through the middle is still concealing some of the fruit complexity. What makes this wine special is the interplay between the more expressive fruit notes and the more tart and structural qualities. Should continue to drink well and many years to come.

  • Prior bottle was a bit over 18 months ago and this wine remains in a very good spot. Nose showed peach, lots of tropical notes and floral qualities. Medium bodied with peach upfront moving quickly towards tropical notes (especially orange, pineapple, mango and passion fruit) in a mid-body that continues to impress both in terms of complexity and depth. Backside continues to show tart orange and lemon combined with acidity that blends quite well with the richer mid-body. The acidity was a bit more restrained in this bottle (as opposed to my prior one) which allowed some of the mid-body complexity to shine through a bit more. My personal preference is for rieslings in this phase; where they show great fruit, but couple it with significant acidity so I will probably drink these earlier than many. This wine is clearly still on the upswing, several years from true peak, but I will probably open my next bottle in mid-Q2 2020.

  • Floral and intense tropical fruit notes mixed with impressive acidity on the nose. Opened at 47F, warming to 52F and showed best about mid-way through the range as the acidity was still intense, but the tropical notes were becoming more expressive, leading to a complex overall experience. Starts off with crystalline peach and then moving quickly to the tropical end of the spectrum which an impressive mix of orange, mango, pineapple, guava and passion fruit. There's lots of depth through the middle, but the true complexity of this wine is still being concealed by the acidity which is (unsurprisingly) quite intense at this young age. Towards the backend, there's a burst of tart orange, lemon and tart guava along with even more depth before the finish comes in with mineral notes, light spices and impressive acidity. The mix of tropical notes, wonderfully intense acidity and tart, yet rich finishing notes truly set this wine apart. With this level of fruit and acidity, easily has 10+ years ahead of it, probably more. I will certainly be seeking other wines from this producer.

  • Day 2 in the Mosel - Egon Muller, A.J. Adam, & Vollenweider (Mosel Saar Ruwer - Germany): Another spectacular sweet wine from Vollenwieder. Loaded with juicy, tropical fruits and balanced with zippy acidity. Lovely finish…the acidity really pops. Gorgeous.
