  • Given 2 hours of air before drinking. Ruby center, garnet rim. Like a bottle 3 years ago in that the black fruit aromas gave way to stem and fennel notes over time. Very Angerville and very 1996-lean, high acid, and quite mineral, although by the 4 hour mark, it softened and had sweetened to an extent. Best at the end, so it is certainly not on the verge of collapse, but those craving more in the way of flesh and fruit need not apply. The rather angular style was successful with food, but the rising greenness was not my cup of tea and detracted from the overall balance.

  • Another undocumented bottle from the cellar with consistent notes served after 4 hours opened in the cellar. It shows a medium cherry red color, quite clear and pure with a beautiful nose of dark cherry, wild strawberry, spice and limestone. The palate is medium weight with the same compote of cherry, strawberry and spice balanced by a quite striking minerality and grip. This has lovely transparency and detail balanced by a fine and persistent finish. It highlights the magic of aged Burgundy and indeed as with many 96s absolutely needed it.

  • Very good but this takes a lot of air to get there. Initially this shows the bad side of '96: it was quite acidic and angular, without the fruit to round it out. But with hours of time, the acids died down and this became a red-fruited, velvet-textured beauty with layers of emerging tertiary deliciousness. The last sip, at hour 5, was the best one. This certainly is showing mature elements, but I still think this is probably 3-5 years from apogee.

  • Another undocumented bottle from the cellar with consistent notes. It shows a medium cherry red color, quite clear and pure with a beautiful nose of dark cherry, wild strawberry, cinnamon, beetroot and limestone. The palate is medium weight with the same compote of cherry, strawberry and spice balanced by a quite striking minerality. The overall impact is of a fine gossamer structured wine of lovely transparency and balance with enough distinctive mineral and spice to be really delicious.

  • Hefty and fruity Pinot Noir aromas. Balanced, with great depth and concentration. This bottle was in a perfect state now.
