  • A session of firsts.. My 1st ever First Growth (1er Grand Cru Classé), and such a privilege to be able to enjoy a well-kept 30 year old Pauillac from the Bordeaux left bank.

It was a crazy special lunch session, we had this Latour 1992 alongside a Promontory Propietary Red 2015... and no one agreed with me (Not EC, LF, JY and definitely not Mika) when I found this Latour 1992 slightly better in terms of depth and richness, compared to the Promontory 2015 on this particular date!

The rainy summer of 1992 resulted in a lot of diluted wines across the Medoc, but Latour did a wonderful job salvaging this wonderful wine. For me, this is one of the best balanced wines I have ever indulged in, with amazing elegance too.

The nose was initially muted, but over 3 hours of bottle-breathing, the black-fruit aroma started tickling our senses. I was so excited to have the first drop of Latour on my palate, and the black and red-fruit was so fresh and lively, balanced with sufficient acidity and cedar as well as chocolate notes.

This wine is in a great place now, with an amazing lingering long finish of close to 1 minute. Best of all, I loved the sensuous mouthfeel with amazingly sophisticated and rounded tannins.

I am so grateful to have had the chance to try my first 1st Growth, and to have a Latour as "my first".. it wasn't a bad day at all!

    Ownership and geography:
Château Latour is owned by Groupe Artemis, which is a holding company with investments in fashion fine, wine, art and more. It was founded by François Pinault in 1992 as a family investment tool.

Latour is located at the very south-eastern tip Pauillac in the Médoc region (North-west of Bordeaux) and is located close to the border of my namesake, Saint-Julien. Latour is also located only a few hundred metres from the banks of the Gironde estuary.

    History:
Chateau Latour has an amazing and long-lived history, going back to the 14th century!

Amazingly in 1787, Thomas Jefferson, then Ambassador of the United States to France and future President of the United States discovered this vineyard.

Imagine that back then.. Chateau Latour was expensive. Very expensive in fact! In the late 1700s, it was selling more for more than 20x as much as one of ordinary Bordeaux wines. Hmm, perhaps if we compare to today, and estimate that an average Bdx is USD 30-40.. With this bottle being USD 800-900, it is still the same ratio!

    The modern era:
The modernisation of winemaking at Chateau Latour started back in 1964. The old wooden vats were replaced with new stainless steel ones, which qas quite revolutionary back then. This allows higher quality and more perfect alcoholic fermentation, as chilled water on the side of the vats more acurately control temperatures.

And, in 2012, Chateau Latour announced they would no longer be selling Chateau Latour as a future eg. No more En Primeur sales! Instead, Chateau Latour began releasing their wines when they were considered ready to drink with the 2012 released in 2020.

Chateau Latour has been described as having produced some of the best wines in their history, since 1996 - And whilst this was a 1992 vintage, it was still tremendously enjoyable.

    What about this 1992?
This 1992 vintage is a blend of 75% Cab Sauv, 20% Merlot, 4% CF and 1% PV. Production output was 175,000 bottles.

Parker described that 50% of the 1992 harvest went into the "grand vin." It is described as medium-bodied, and a "surprisingly supple Latour" which is extremely well-made, and an approachable style of Latour that should age well for at least 10-15 years.

  • Nose of blackcurrant and deep earthy notes. Medium body with tobacco, cedarwood and dark red berries. Short aftertaste with tertiary aromas hinting a little eucalyptus and vanilla. A nice acidity. The wine has peaked but is absolutely drinkable still. Not a great vintage from Bordeaux, but still pleasurable and typical from the region.

  • Flawless bottle and lvl high neck.

Nice dark color with browning edges.

The nose is classic old Bordeaux. Tobacco, leather and dusty dark fruit.

The taste is red fruited. Age signs for sure, but well alive. The fruit is nice, and the tertiary notes as well as the soft acidity. What is missing is the structure. The wine feels simple and rather short.

I wouldn’t save this any longer. Consumed in a 1992 themed tasting.
