Well past its prime by now, unfortunately. Remnants of fruit. Light color, still pinkish. Reasonably balanced. Not yet vinegary. I imagine this was much better a few years ago, but it didn't have the stuffing to last 18 years.

decanted & poured (small amount of fine sediment). pretty, dark garnet colored; overwhelmingly bretty to start, almost too much stank to get past, but after about 30 min., showed dark sour cherry liqueur & pine needle(!) notes; med+ bodied; much better on palate, intense dry blueberry & black sour cherry, forest floor, compost heap, bright acidity & composed fine tannins. lone soldiers can be a pleasant surprise, or considerable disappointment; with no expectations, this turned out all right, after the funk blew off.
crispy skin maine bay sockeye salmon w/ sungold tomato & brown butter vinaigrette; roasted marinated gold beet & roma bean salad w/arugula & frisee: roasted prairie blush potatoes w/garlic & fleur de sel

My experience with this wine parallels that of Rieslingfan. We opened a bottle two years ago that was a muddled, thin mess, but the one we drank over the last two nights was terrific: medium-weight, balanced sweet fruit and tart acids, sour cherry with a bit of of strawberry and some toasted sesame on the nose. Very nice with food or to sip. No rush to drink.
