  • Fermented spontaneously, aged in stainless steel on the fine lees. 12% alcohol.

Pale lime green color. Quite savory and even slightly funky nose with aromas of ripe citrus fruits, stone dust, some odd earthy tones, even a little bit of this herbal character that reminds me of lager beer and a hint of honey. The wine is medium-bodied on the palate with nuanced flavors of ripe white fruits, some stony minerality, light bready character, a little bit of grapefruit, a hint of some waxy character and a touch of honeyed sweetness. The wine comes across as very balanced and fine-tuned, even a bit racy with its high acidity. The finish is medium-long and ever-so-slightly sharp with quite pronounced acidity and quite light and subtle flavors of ripe citrus fruits, a hint of stony bitterness, a hint of pithy grapefruit and a lightest sulphurous-skunky touch of hard-boiled eggs.

This was a nice, enjoyable and very distinctive Riesling, but also a somewhat underwhelming one: it seems that the overall style was subtle - even complex in its own way - but also quite delicate and restrained as well. Furthermore, there were also some slightly weird notes and the wine came across as a bit disjointed. However, Querbach is known for a style where even the most basic wines in his range need a lot of time, so perhaps this wine would've performed a lot well if it was decanted several hours beforehand? Overall the wine felt like it was in a rather dumb phase and in serious need of further cellaring to resolve its tightly-knit style. Great value at only 8,70€, but I recommend not touching these for the next 4-5 years.
