  • 2012 Maison Roche de Bellene Bâtard Montrachet lived up to its Grand Cru fame, with great intensity, complexity and balance. It was clear and light golden in colour without any sediments. The complex nose was filled with brioche, ripe starfruit and Bartlett pear with subtle yoghurt lactic undertone. With two hours of in-bottle aeration, aromas of jasmine, grapefruit and mixed red and brown apples developed. The mouthfeel was full-bodied, intense and medium acidic. The intensity and balance were of Grand Cru quality. The long finish was filled with salty minerality, lemon meringue and spices. It paired very well with Hida Wagyu, as it cut through the grease and enhanced the beefy savoury flavours.

According to the information on the back label, tthe grapes were havested from a tiny 0.05-hectare parcel on 22nd September 2012, and the wine was aged in 100% new oak (unsurprising a single barrel given the limited volume), bottled on 2nd April 2014. As few as 180 bottles and 6 magnums were produced.
