Medium-light garnet. Simple nose of figs, apricots, tobacco leaf, dark cocoa, and black pepper. Been sipping for the last hour and the palate is pretty much the same, so I would consider a short decant in the future. Palate matches the nose exactly, and it is very fresh given time it has spent in the bottle. Finish is long with fig, apricot, cigar box, and black pepper. Pairs perfectly with Spanish Blue Cheese and Manchego.
My hopes were not high for this given the 82/83 split vintage. But given it was a birth year wine, I had to pop this open around my 40th. Not disappointed at all and Niepoort continues to impress.

No notes taken. While it had quite a few layers, was certainly intense and expressive, this was clearly too sweet, too alcoholic (the alcohol was not well masked, imo) and on top I just don’t like porty fruit aromas. Others, who like port wines will certainly score it higher.

Petrus vs. Le Pin vs. Lafleur 2004-2011, blind (Fribourg): With the cheese and charcuterie platter. Amber color, like the 1990 Yquem, this was really rich as well. Lots of apricot, smoke, vanilla, molasses. Too sweet and simple for my taste.

Roasted almonds, coffee, burned sugar, candid fig and plum, a bit of cigar box and elements of dried flowers. A beguiling and nice bouquet. But the palate is overpowering and comes across too alcoholic – however with a nice, sweet caramel touch to it.

A private tasting (Restaurant Merkelbach, Amsterdam, NL): Hint of caramel on the nose but fresh, classic, harmonious; nice weight of fruit, good backbone, classic style, velvety tannins, elegant, lovely balance and length.
