  • Ugh, corked. Was looking forward to this.

  • Opened an hour before drinking. Solid brunello - nothing jumped off the page but nicely balanced and easy drinking

  • Prior bottle was 13 months ago and this wine continues to both improve and impress. Really pretty black cherry on the nose, along with plum and balanced spices. Between medium and full bodied with black cherry upfront, again showing that very nice mix of rounded, expressive blackfruit contrasted brighter, higher toned qualities. Mid-body adds darker black cherry, additional depth, plum and some brighter blackberry. Mid-body has opened up a bit from my prior bottle, such that it shows excellent balance overall and true elegance through the middle. Tannins , acidity and tart blackfruit notes are very much in keeping with the fruit and support, rather than distract. Finishes with spices and lengthy mineral notes. Overall, the story remains the mid-body, with it combination of black cherry and plum. It now is more expressive while remaining in balance with the structural qualities. This should be able to maintain this level over the next several years and could even improve a bit more over the short term.

  • I found this a little tired. Had some interest on nose the nose. Dark stuff- meat, thyme, black fruit. Did not have great energy or interest in the mouth. Was having to force myself to take another sip. I likelly would have felt differently if I was drinking it with Osso-Bucco.

Huge caveat- I have very little experience with brunello. I have had the occasional aged brunello from good houses that made me realize how good the stuff can be. I bought a bunch of 2010s from various houses that were well reviewed but none of them have made me restock the cellar with more. I opened this one for visiting family and we did not have it with food. Drank over two days. Got more tired on the second day.

  • * Wine 2 out of 6, YOLO wine club - 2010 Brunello tasting. Decanted for 3-hours.

Color - garnet with a ruby rim, suggesting of age, but still very lively.

On the nose - WOW. Wild, seductive and extremely expressive, with initial notes of strawberry, mocha, hay, black pepper, thyme, and smoked meat, gradually developing into more floral and herbaceous cents, from sage to elderflower. Absolutely gorgeous, and could easily be mistaken for a top Gevrey Chambertin, a-la Bernard Dugat-Py or Domaine Trapet.

The mouth however was a bit of a letdown in comparison to the stunning nose, with a slightly thin and short presence that didn't back the initial promise. Despite lacking in structure and balance, the wine still delivered tasty layers of red fruit and good complexity and was further elevated by the Osso-Bucco that was served alongside it.

91 points on the night. If the mouth had matched the nose this would be in 93-94 points territory, but alas.

Drink now, I see no upside in waiting.
