Wow, a beautiful, mature, Burgundian pinot with layers of earth, mushroom, herb and spice accenting the round and still-fresh black cherry. At peak at age 30.

1994 Smack-down consisting of one Chardonnay from Stony Hill and a total of five Pinot Noirs from Brick House, William Selyem (Sonoma Coast), Broadley Vineyards Reserve, Ken Weight Cellars (Shea Vineyards), and Mt. Eden Estate. All wines were purchased upon release and stored in a cool cellar until consumed. All the wines were decanted. The red wine bottles contained sediment after years of resting undisturbed.
Tied with the Ken Wright for the wine with the greatest Ullage; both at around 1-1/4”. A bit of seepage was noticeable once the capsule was removed. Raspberry vinegar, lots of dill, eucalyptus, licorice, soy/teriyaki; all disjointed. Meaty. Menthol. Better the second day with the odd flavors more subordinate to the meatiness found in the wine. A completely tired wine. Probably not flawed just dead given its age and poor corkage. Rated third place out of five Pinot Noirs tasted.
(Alcohol 13.8 percent and the highest of the wines tasted.)

A treat to drink one of my first Brick House purchases The wine held up soft no tannins was not oxidized, but also no fruit very flat, it is past prime drinking window. Have to drink these Pinots earlier

Showing a little age on appearance. The nose: minerality, olive, briney, wet cedar plank, tree bark. Palate: Red berries and plums, hint of smoke. Nice balance.
