Medium red, almost see through but not quite. Not a lot of initial aromatics, but this came with air after about two hours. Perhaps this suffered from being consumed too quickly but this was a dense and angular bottle without the delicate silken quality I expect from a Volnay 1er Cru. It gradually came around through the course of the evening, proving once again that the last glass of Red Burgundy is often the best. Cranberry and redcurrant, hints of an earthen forest floor, but it needed serious coaxing, My only bottle so I won't be able to see whether I just opened this too early or during a closed phase. I note from the CT stats that over 50% have been consumed, so disappointing to see just one other tasting note for guidance. In summary pleasant enough but quite hard work and I reckon there are better options out there for £40 on the table. It wasn't bad, but these things are all relative - much younger and humbler bourgogne rouge give more pleasure for half the price on this showing.

At first I was psyched, velvety, crunchy Volnay fruit popped right out. Then it slapped me in the face and closed right up. Yields in 2013 were tiny and you can feel the coiled density. At least 5 years and 10 is probably for the best.
