  • Retail $70. 100% Syrah. One of the more renowned wines from the Jean-Luc Colombo portfolio, I was thrilled to see this on the shelf, waiting to be opened. Dark, but short of brooding, with a hint of barnyard on the nose, this is quintessential Cornas, at least to me. The palate is reserved, for sure, but lacks the barnyard aspect that the nose portends. Good plum, blackberry, plenty of earth, spice, and tartness. Outstanding. 93 Points.

  • The rounded and smooth side of Cornas. Good contrast to the more "rustic" style that some producers make. This wine is clean and, at 10 years old, pretty accessible now.

Tobacco, black pepper, black licorice, coffee grounds, ripe blueberry and ripe blackcurrant on the nose. The palate, which is rather fruit backward, adds smoked meat, chocolate/cocoa, bitter herbs and a hint of mint.

Medium + body, medium + acid, medium powdery tannins that linger on the finish. Rounded with a nice texture. Drinking pretty well now. It could age 2-5 more years; but definitely doesn't have to.

Great pairing with grilled tri tip.

  • Tried to order the 2012 Cornas we had last night, but they brought the 2013. No comparison. The ‘13 is much less intense/closed than the more accessible ‘12. It is very fruity and floral but seems to lack the leather and savory notes that made the previous vintage so interesting. Disappointed to see that this is the vintage I have at home too!

  • If tasting this blind next to a Calais Cuvee du Canton, you would think it was two different vintages of the same wine. Similar to the Calais, this has a nose of roasted fig and plum. Opens with a black fruit, fig, and spice cake note. Plum comes in to play towards the fimish and almost a blood orange type of citrus comes in as well. Finishes with some acidity but overall I'd say this is where the Calais actually exerts a little bit of dominance. Overall, a very nice wine. Still think it has a few years to develop. Wanted badly to rate it 9.3, but it just wasn't there.

  • For the fan of non-meaty dominated Syrah, this one will be your jam. To me, this wine was very fruity. Not in a good, sweet way but in a "dude, scale back the fruit and give me something else in the way of notes" kind of way. The nose seemed to be more consistent with brambly blackberry and cassis, with a hint of chalky youthfulness. The wine then developed into a beautiful, more forgiving note of rose petals, orchids, hawthorne. This wine finishes with some depth, and definitely not on the grilled meat side. For a syrah, very enjoyable, not overdone, and pretty much let the grape speak for itself. Still has a LONG way to go!
