  • And now for something completely different. A nose that is 1/2 green apple skin and 1/2 saltwater from the lagoons. Varietal completely unlike anything else: not much of the spice of viognier, some of the herbaceousness of Sauvignon blanc, the freshness of muscat, the clarity of Riesling, but in completely different proportions to any of those. Closest is a brisk version of dry semillon. Wine slightly oxidative in taste and slightly darkened gold in color, but in no danger of falling apart: we were getting new notes all the way through, including a weirdly delightful spice note about an hour in ( very attenuated and I can’t quite remember what it was now). Color would lead one to expect a sweeter wine, and this flirts with the exotic semillon notes of Sauternes with none of the sweetness. Quite clean but slightly short finish.
Score: 92. Relative to expectations: 0

  • The second vintage of this wine made from the forgotten local Venetian grape of Dorona ( golden grape) in a small walled vineyard on the island of Mazzorbo in the Venitian Lagoon. Bottled in a Murano made bottle. Approximately 4000 vines targeted to make 4000-5000 50cl bottles, no oak and with about a month of Maceration. http://venissa.it

The 2011 to us was effectively an un-Oaked Viognier, banana, exotic fruit and light acidity., lightly ooxidative. A very good effort of a wine , well made and elegant. Having tried the 2010 just after we think contrary to the winemakers hopes this is not a wine to age. 88-90 and drink now.
