  The Frontera label seems to consistently provide ultra-cheap wines of passable quality, and this is no exception. It's my favorite red in this price range, I can buy it for $4.20 a bottle.
  
  For a Merlot, this is a little on the sweet side, although the sweetness is all up front and the finish is dry. Aroma is very fruity. The label describes a "hint of cacao" and I'm not getting that, it's mainly just fruity, cherry and cranberry are the main notes I notice, although there's a hint of a malty black tea in the aroma too (like an Assam). Moderate bodied. More sour than I'd like, the sourness has a bit of edge, and this is the thing I find least pleasant about this wine. This edginess makes it seem a bit harsh if consuming it on its own, without food.
  
  Overall though this is a versatile wine that pairs well with many foods, especially meat, chicken, fruit, or pasta. This wine has a clean, fresh character that cuts through heavy or greasy foods in a refreshing way. This wine has also been very well-received by a wide range of people, when I have served it. It's smooth enough that people who dislike dry reds are usually okay with it, but seems to satisfy people who like drier wines as well.
