The rankest, most disgusting cork I've come across in years. Even more worryingly it fell straight into the bottle when the butler's thief touched it.
Burnished gold with a green tinge. Honey, raisins and caramelised apples on the nose. Surprisingly good on the attack.. Fills out nicely. Just a hint of sweetness, but with more than enough acidity to leave it feeling very dry, with a mouth-puckering acidity. I suspect this was probably never a particularly distinguished wine (well, I did pay under a fiver for it 20 years ago), but it's a perfectly good, fully mature Auslese. Attractive finish with very decent length.

This wine was amazing. 33 years old, with an excellent fill and intact cork. Colour of deep gold. Sweetness somewhat diminished with time, and perfectly balanced with acid. Amazingly long finish. Somewhat waxy texture. Tropical fruits, petrol, honey. What is perhaps most amazing is the "provenance": while I cannot account for its first 32 years, the wine was mistakenly shipped to me from NYC less than a year ago, in the late Summer heat, and I retrieved it from the bottom of a box floating in the remains of another bottle shipped with it that had broken. Needless to say, my hopes were not high, but they were hugely exceeded.

8.5% A rather mucky, gunky top of the cork on removing the capsule, but there's no sign of ullage and the cork's in good condition. A very marked, quite intense yellow-gold, but bright and clear. A very intense nose, blending lots of honey scents with a fairly strong petrolly structure. Very smooth on the attack. Fills dramatically, with good, very marked riesling character. Lots and lots of flavour and depth of flavours. Just a slight trace of very elegant acidity on the finish. A nice example of a fairly mature Mosel riesling. Perhaps a bit sweeter and flabbier than the norm, lacking some of the elegance of the finest examples. But it's still a fine wine of notable rarity, especially at the price (£11.55 reduced to £4.95!). The colour is quite remarkable and the honeyed, sweet scents on the nose are more than balanced by the acidity of the basic wine. Very well rounded, clean, long and attractive. Very Good Indeed.
