Mostly tasty wines with Christine's shabu shabu. (Christine's): I really like Eric & Christine Nicolas, but this wine is dreadful. It doesn’t help that I’m not a fan at all of Pinot D’Aunis, but a poor vintage makes this stuff even worse. It literally smells like freshly watered potting soil with menthol and green herbs. “It does smell good,” Jay retorts. There’s no fruit here. It’s all greenness, wet earth and really pissed off acidity. Jay, it’s all yours. D.

Like a number of French reds in 2004, this smells like someone crushed out a cigar in the glass. Yes there's some red fruit in there, but the ashen character carries forward to the parched palate that has tannins that can be most politely described as chalky. The angular finish is more acute than right.

The nose is pretty vegetal. I get tobacco leaf, brussell sprouts, maybe some spice like cumin? Basically it's an odd sort of aroma.
The palate is kind of thin and green. Quite acidic. The fruit is pretty tasty but it's hard to get to it through the other flavors. I wouldn't be surprised if this wine ages into something better - but that's just a guess. As of right now, though, I don't like it.

Real Wine Assault (K&L Wines, San Francisco, Cal.): $33. More depth, still not that compelling. Good+.
