  • strålande bra barolo, på tok för ung så klart men denna kommer bli riktig bra om ett par år.

  • A wine I wouldn’t normally think to open this young, but we were invited over for ribs (socially distanced at different tables, etc.) and this seemed the most appropriate bottle on hand. Though somewhat of a gamble on such a youthful Barolo, this is an era where early approachability seems more the norm than the strict and stern wines of yesteryear. Having said that it’s of course producer/vintage/cru dependent.

True to form, this did show much softer, rounded and approachable than expected. Took a small taste a few hours before serving, and as it gave the impression it would naturally open in the glass with dinner, I just put the cork back in to save for later.

Once served for dinner it showed the classic Barolo profile, with a fairly giving nose of red rose, tar, dark cherries. Much the same in the mouth, big dark cherry fruit, somewhat floral, and creamy, it definitely had a chocolate/vanilla note that rounded the wine, and made it more accessible. Not very cloying, but enough to make me wish it were a little less. There’s good medium acidity and tannin underneath, both supporting the fruit well, and never a challenge. A trace of heat shows on the back and through its graceful finish, squarely medium in length and complexity. A wine that worked well for the occasion. More for its function and drinkability, as opposed to a deep and complex Barolo for the back of the cellar. Though one would tend to think that some added complexity may bloom with age here.

  • Good but not greatness yet...

  • Slightly less tannin structure and more obvious red fruit than the 13 casa mate (recognizing the case mate was fairly closed). Both cut from the same cloth, with big tannic structure, a little gloss, midweight feel, balanced acidity and a lot of power. While this has slightly less power than the casa mate, this feels more balanced in fruit and tannin, where there is still big tannic structure but the fruit isn't as buried. Also I pick up some raspberry vs casa mate was more dark cherry. This makes it more approachable, but no less ageable with more fruit that fits my palate.

I suspect I prefer casa mate generally for more concentration, but in this vintage I think this wine wins with less density but better tannin/fruit balance than the casa mate. For 65 paid, excellent qpr. A case buy. Give it a decade though...

94 today. 95+ in time. If someone scores lower, I think their main quibble will be concentration.

Would like to have this against the 13 f rinaldi cannubi riserva. On the palate I think this would be more cherry/raspberry vs ripe cherry, less concentration, with similar tannic structure, and more acid lift (which the Rinaldi lacked a smidgeon of). I suspect the Rinaldi is the better wine, but will check in 5 years for a fun duel.

  • I rarely was disappointed by Elio Grasso lately and this one is another gorgeous Barolo from Ginestra. Bouquet of fresh Cherries, some flowers and menthol notes. On the palate structured with very fine tannins. Overall a powerful but delicate Barolo true to the vintage. I would keep it for at least 5 more years and then enjoy it for 2 more decades.
